Re: Replacing my KX 155
I replaced my old KX 155 with a Garmin GNC 215 connected to my existing Bendix King KI 209 CDI and it works fine. The GNC 215 has a much better, brighter display and more features than the KX 155. However, it requires a separate database from the GTN 650, so it increased my subscription costs by ...

Re: Landings
It's possible to land in on an airstrip from which I cannot take off again. Climb performance with my 180 hp engine and shorter wing is anemic with a heavy load or high density altitude. That's not really a factor on landing but it is on take off. My rule of thumb is not to land on any airstrip that ...

Replaced my audio panel and intercom
I replaced my KMA 24 audio panel and SPA 400 intercom with a Garmin GMA 345 audio panel with built-in intercom. The avionics shop recommended that I replace all 4 of my monaural headphone jacks with stereo jacks so that's what I did. Afterward I realized that two of my David Clark H10-13.4 headsets ...

Replacing my KX 155
My 24 year old KX 155 NAV/COM is heading into the sunset. The squelch doesn't work and it sometimes produces loud static. I've relegated it to mute unless I need to listen to an AWOS or ATIS. I tried to get it repaired but parts are not available anymore. My avionics shop encouraged me to replace it ...

Rocker switches
After my G5 installation, my anti-collision light rocker switch/breaker wouldn't lock in place in the ON position. A comment on things falling into the open top of these switches caused me to mention the possibility to my A&P. He checked on it but felt that a part of the switch had broken. These ...

Re: G5 HSI
I guess I should have known but I discovered that the G5 shows actual airspeed, not GPS-derived, using the pitot tube on the PFD page. A T is installed in the tubing going to your airspeed indicator and a piece of tubing goes from the T to the G5.

G5 HSI
I flew my Maule to PeeDee Avionics in Cheraw SC (KCQW) yesterday to replace the original vacuum DG with a Garmin G5 HSI. There are many advantages to the G5 as an HSI:
No more gyroscopic precession. The G5 comes with a solid state IMU for compass data.
AI combined with HSI. You can switch the G5 ...
